NERA Ride Calendar Notes

NOTES to the NERA Ride Calendar 2008

1. HW = Home Weekend.
2. SW = School Weekend.
3. SH = School Holiday.
4. SD = School Day
5. VG = All rides in Namibia will only be Vet Gate Rides, both club and NERA rides.
6. CH = Compulsory Hold Rides.
7. Two type of rides will be hosted under the NERA authorization, NERA Club Rides and Nera Council Rides. The Organizing Committee at the NERA Club Rides will be one of the six NERA affiliated clubs and the NERA Council Rides will fall directly under the NERA Council with a designated NERA Council member as the Head Official.

8. The maximum distance of club rides is 100 km and the three FEI rides will be 3* rides of 120 Km and / or 160 Km and all rides may be day or night rides or a combination thereof. Noorde was granted special permission by Council to host a 120 Km club ride as an exception and any club that wishes to host an event in excess of a 100 Km have to apply annually at Council.

9. NERA will not host any rides or activities on a religious weekend and / or days like Easter Weekend, etc.

10. As far as possible NERA would try and finish our Endurance rides at the end of September and have no Endurance rides during the months October to December as part of NERA’s  policy to protect our horses due to the summer heat, horse sickness inoculation programs and to give the horses at least three months rest from Endurance activities.

11. Wherever possible we will try and host the Endurance rides over Home Weekends and during school holidays due to the fact that many of our children also participate in other school sports like ruby, Netball, hockey etc. and these activities are normally held over the School Weekends.

12. The Walvis Bay event is scheduled, as far as possible, to be on a Wednesday during the Namibian school holiday during the August / September, There are mainly three reasons for this arrangement, namely to make it possible for our South African guests to be away from their work only for one week where they can departure on the Saturday prior to the ride and be back home by the following Saturday after the ride. The second reason is that we want it to be during the Namibian school holidays due to the fact that our Namibian school children are absent from school for at least a week during the SA Leg of our Annual International competition and should the second leg at Walvis Bay be during our school holiday. With this arrangement both the school children from SA and Namibia have one test during their school term and one during their school holiday which is fair to both countries. The third reason for the last Wednesday is to get in as much as possible rest time for the horses who have participated at Fauresmith and again at Walvis Bay. As far as possible NERA will try to host this event as close as possible to a full moon date.

13. The Walvis Bay ride will simultaneously be the Namibian National Championships as well as the International Championships between Namibia, South Africa and any other competing countries. Council also intents to elect an official Barbarian team consisting of riders from both SA, Namibia and other foreign competitors to compete against the official Namibian and SA team and any other National official team. We are also investigating the possibility to have National Official Development teams from SA and Namibia to compete against each other as well as against any other National Development team(s) that which to enter.

14. Our Independence ride will be hosted on the weekend closest to the Independence Weekend irrespective of the moon phases and will therefore be named “The Independence Ride”

15. All Namibian/ NERA riders must remember that it is compulsory to apply via the Council (Secretary) to the Namibian Sports Commission should they wish to compete in any other country. The NSC must also be notified via the Council Secretary, should any foreigner wishes to participate in Namibia at any of our rides.

17. No other NERA Ride may be hosted on the same day that the National Namibian team participate anywhere in Southern Africa.

18. NERA does have three international Tri Nation rides this year against SA and Botswana on the basis that the SA and the Namibian legs will be Official National sides from Namibia and Botswana and the Botswana leg will be official Development teams from the three said countries.
